COURSE INFORMATION: The course is a loop measuring approximately 7.7 miles in length, starting and finishing at the upper lawn of Trail Creek Cabin. The course is primarily single track with only a couple short stretches of double track. The trails are located on private property but some points do cross over onto USFS lands.
From the start, runners will join the City of Sun Valley multi-use path and head down to Hemingway Memorial. Crossing through the memorial, down to Trail Creek then up a short hill to pick up the Proctor Loop trail. Proctor Loop will be run counterclockwise, heading up the "gut". This is the first and longest climb of the route.
After a couple short switchbacks at the top of the climb, a short traverse will lead runners to the Proctor Loop ridge descent. A great descent with incredible views of Sun Valleys Bald Mountain, the town of Ketchum, and the White Clouds nine hole.
After the descent, runners will traverse onto Aspen Loop, if the fall has been mild, the aspens could be in full color. A cruiser loop through the aspen groove takes runners to the bench trails. Taking a right, participants can now let the legs spin. This is a section of the course that is "flat" and a loop so you can size up where you stand in the rankings (if that matters).
Returning from the bench loop, runners are faced with the second and last climb; a two switchback climb through the spruce trees above Trail Creek Cabin. This ascent takes runners to a junction with the Aspen Loop trail. Turning right (backtracking a short distance), runners will finish the
switchback descent of Proctor Loop intersecting with the lower section of Proctor Loop which was climbed at the start. From this
intersection, runners will back track to the finish; crossing Trail Creek, going through Hemingway Memorial, down the multi-use path to the finish.
COURSE MARKINGS: Markings being used for this course will be: Pin flags in pairs - yellow and orange in color, clothes pins with yellow and orange flagging clipped onto brush, red flagging will be laid across intersections indication "wrong way". If you step over red flagging you are off course. Intersections will be marked by standard practice, meaning, as you approach an intersection markings will be placed before the intersection on the side of the trail indicating the direction to run. The markings will continue through the intersection for a short distance. To explain, if the course turns "right" the markings will be on the "right" as
you approach, go through and continue past the intersection. If the course goes "left", the markings will be on the "left".
If there are no intersections or forks or confusing sections of trail, do not expect to see markings. You should always be on a trail, if you are bushwhacking, you are off course. This will be explained again at the prerace brief.
AID STATIONS: There will be two aid stations offered. They may be staffed or they may be self serve. Aid #1 (you will go through this station twice) will be at approximately mile 1 just before the start of the climb up the Proctor Loop "gut". Aid #2 will be at the exit of Aspen Loop turning onto the bench loop. The stations will have water and GU Brew. Unfamiliar with GU Brew? Think Gatorade but a GU version.
